Overview
The 2021 Basic Life Support (BLS) blended course provides prehospital and healthcare  professionals the knowledge and skills necessary to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adult, child, and infant patients. Consistent with the American Red Cross Focused Updates and Guidelines 2020, BLS is the foundational CPR/AED program typically required for prehospital and healthcare professionals. Through the use of lecture, skills, demonstration, practice and case-based emergency response scenarios with a focus on team-based response, BLS builds the key critical thinking problem solving and team dynamic skills that are needed to drive better patient outcomes. Upon successful completion of the course learners will receive a 2-year Basic Life Support digital certificate with anytime anywhere access to certificate and training history.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Apply concepts of effective teamwork when caring for a patient experiencing a life-threatening emergency
  2. Integrate communication, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills during a high-performance BLS team response.
  3. Apply a systematic, continuous approach to assess, recognize and care for adults, children and infants experiencing a life-threatening emergency.
  4. Perform a rapid assessment for responsive and unresponsive adults, children and infants
  5. Effectively care for adults, children and infants experiencing a life-threatening injury or illness.
  6. Effectively care for adults, children and infants in respiratory arrest or respiratory failure.
  7. State the principles of high-quality CPR for adults, children and infants.
  8. Identify BLS differences among adults, children and infants.
  9. Provide high-quality chest compressions for adults, children and infants.
  10. Deliver effective ventilations to adults, children and infants using a pocket mask and bag-valve-mask (BVM) resuscitator.
  11. Demonstrate effective use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for adults, children and infants.
  12. Provide high-quality BLS care for adults, children and infants in single- and multiple-provider situations.
  13. Deliver effective back blows, abdominal thrusts and chest thrusts for adults, children and infants with airway obstruction.
  14. State the principles of caring for a pregnant patient in cardiac arrest.
  15. State the principles of care for a patient experiencing an opioid overdose.
