Overview
Updated in December 2021, the Bloodborne Pathogens course teaches participants how bloodborne pathogens are spread, how to avoid exposure and what to do if exposed to infectious material.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand how infections can be spread from one person to another.
  2. Understand the responsibilities both the employer and the employee have in protecting the employee from exposure to bloodborne pathogens on the job.
  3. Describe the contents of an exposure control plan and understand the importance of being familiar with the exposure control plan at their place of employment.
  4. Explain what it means to take standard precautions and describe examples of practices that are included as part of standard precautions.
  5. Describe when and how to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to limit the spread of bloodborne pathogens.
  6. Demonstrate proper technique for removing disposable gloves.
  7. Describe when and how to wash their hands to limit the spread of bloodborne pathogens.
  8. Describe proper technique for cleaning equipment and surfaces soiled with blood or other potentially infectious materials, and for disposing of contaminated materials.
  9. Describe what to do if an exposure incident occurs.

Accreditation

This CE activity is accredited for 4.5 Basic CEH by The American Red Cross, an organization accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education.

I further understand that my course completion records may be accessed by or shared with such regulators as state EMS offices, training officers, and NREMT on a password-protected need-to-know basis.
