Overview

The American Red Cross has collaborated with the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) to develop a new and innovative option for neonatal resuscitation training that addresses the management of the newborn both in and out of the traditional delivery room or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) Foundations course will help expand both the reach and access to scientifically validated training across the healthcare continuum.

The course is designed to meet the needs of clinicians who may be present at a birth or involved in the care of a newborn requiring resuscitation, while awaiting the arrival of an advanced resuscitation team.

The NALS Foundations course:

  • Utilizes a traditional learning model and is designed to provide a solid understanding of foundational concepts in neonatal resuscitation.

  • Combines evidence-based interventions, psychomotor skills and high-reliability principles with critical thinking and problem-solving strategies to equip clinicians with the necessary tools for effective intervention.

  • Addresses the management of the newborn both in the traditional delivery room or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) as well as outside in the emergency department, birthing centers and in emergency medical services (EMS) settings.

  • Topics include planning and preparation for birth, initial care interventions, positive pressure ventilation, laryngeal mask airway (LMA) insertion and the insertion of an orogastric tube.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate high-quality core neonatal advanced life support skills, including positive pressure ventilation, inserting a laryngeal mask and inserting an orogastric tube.
  2. Improve the interprofessional healthcare team’s performance through integration of high-reliability principles in the preparation, delivery, evaluation and outcome optimization in neonatal advanced life support.
  3. Evaluate the newborn requiring resuscitation and incorporate effective and appropriate neonatal advanced life support within one’s role in the interprofessional healthcare team.
  4. Analyze which specialized neonatal advanced life support care needs (e.g., equipment, supplies, competent providers) may be needed outside of the delivery room environment.
  5. Organize a high-performance interprofessional team for resuscitation of the newborn.
  6. Support the patient, family and interprofessional healthcare team through the resuscitation with effective communication.
