Administering Emergency Oxygen

Commission on Accreditation For Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE)-Basic (2.25 hours)

The Administering Emergency Oxygen course gives participants the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to a victim of a breathing emergency using breathing devices, including resuscitation masks, bag-valve-mask resuscitators (BVMs) and emergency oxygen.

1. Recognize a breathing emergency.
2. Provide effective ventilations using a resuscitation mask or a bag-value-mask (BVM) resuscitator.
3. Explain how administering emergency oxygen can benefit a person with hypoxia or difficulty breathing and identify situations when it may be appropriate to administer emergency oxygen.
4. Demonstrate how to assemble a variable-flow-rate oxygen system safely and effectively.
5. State safety precautions related to the storage, handling and use of emergency oxygen.
6. State when and how to use a pulse oximeter.
7. If including the optional Suctioning topic, participants will also be able to: Demonstrate how to safely and effectively use a suctioning device.
8. If including the optional Basic Airways topic, participants will also be able to: Demonstrate how to safely and effectively insert an oropharyngeal airway (OPA) in an adult, child or infant.
9. If including the optional Basic Airways topic, participants will also be able to: Demonstrate how to safely and effectively insert a nasopharangeal airway (NPA) in an adult, child or infant.

This CE activity is accredited for 2.25 Emergency First Responder CEH by The American Red Cross, an organization accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education.

I understand that the American Red Cross as a requirement of CAPCE accreditation will submit a record of my course completions to the CAPCE AMS. I further understand that my course completion records may be accessed by or shared with such regulators as state EMS offices, training officers, and NREMT on a password-protected need-to-know basis. In addition, I understand that I may review my record of CAPCE accredited course completions by contacting CAPCE.
