Overview
The Emergency Medical Response program provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to work as an emergency medical responder (EMR) to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical personnel take over.

Objectives
The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response course is to provide the participant with the knowledge and skills necessary to work as an emergency medical responder (EMR) to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical personnel take over. At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Apply important fundamentals as an emergency medical responder, including bloodborne pathogen precautions, proper body mechanics, medico-legal and ethics principles, self-care, and anatomy and physiology
  2. Demonstrate scene safety, primary and secondary assessment, communication, documentation skills.
  3. Support airway and breathing with airway management and supplemental oxygen.
  4. Identify multiple cardiac emergencies and providing CPR and automated external defibrillation as necessary.
  5. Differentiate multiple medical emergency response, including special situations such as poisoning, substance abuse and misuse, environmental emergencies, and behavioral emergencies.
  6. Recognize and treat traumatic emergencies, including shock and bleeding.
  7. Describe emergency response for special populations, including pediatrics, the elderly, patients with special healthcare or functionals needs. and patients in labor.
  8. Examine EMS Operations topics such as access and extrication, hazardous material emergencies, incident command and multiple-casualty incidents, response to disasters and terrorism, and special operations.

Accreditation

This CE activity is accredited for 20.0 Emergency First Responder CEH by The American Red Cross, an organization accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education.


Additional Information

I understand that the American Red Cross as a requirement of CAPCE accreditation will submit a record of my course completions to the CAPCE AMS. I further understand that my course completion records may be accessed by or shared with such regulators as state EMS offices, training officers, and NREMT on a password-protected need-to-know basis. In addition, I understand that I may review my record of CAPCE accredited course completions by contacting CAPCE.
