Overview
Enable professionals with cutting-edge insights to cover the entire scope of moderate sedation.  The American Red Cross was developed content in collaboration with the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA).  Improve patient safety in operations outside of the operating room.  Prevent the side effects with medication or proper care before and during surgery.  Reduce frequency of rescue interventions.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify indications for adult procedural sedation, as well as its adjuncts and alternatives.
  2. Describe the pharmacokinetic properties of sedatives, analgesics, and reversal agents used in adult procedural sedation.
  3. Summarize the key components of the sedation assessment and documentation prior to, during, and after sedation.
  4. Integrate the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Physical Status classification system with the assessment of the adult patient prior to procedural sedation.
  5. Distinguish how the level of sedation will determine the role of individuals within the healthcare team.
  6. Interpret how the continuum of depth of sedation relates to the need for rescue interventions in the adult patient.
  7. Apply the Responsiveness, Airway, Breathing, Circulation (RABC) approach in adult patients to identify adverse events such as apnea and hypoventilation.
  8. Choose the discharge criteria required for post-procedural adult sedation based on evidence-based practices.
  9. Explain the handoff process, including its significance to improve communication within the healthcare team.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by American Red Cross and American Society of Anesthesiologists. American Red Cross is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Physician Credit Designation

American Red Cross designates this enduring material activity for a maximum of 3.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

Nurse Credit Designation

American Red Cross designates this continuing education activity for 3.75 contract hours. 

Pharmacist Credit Designation

American Red Cross designates this continuing education activity for 3.75 contact hours (0.375 CEUs). (Universal Activity Number – JA0007329-9999-23-001-H05-P). This is a knowledge activity.

Physician Associate Credit Designation

American Red Cross has been authorized by the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 3.75 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 7/31/2026. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

Dentist Credit Designation

American Red Cross is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. ADA CERP is a service of the

American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry.
