Overview

Humanitarian Services Grand Rounds is a recurring, interprofessional learning series for health professionals involved in delivery of humanitarian services to populations served by the American Red Cross. The learning sessions are presented live in a virtual MS Teams environment, and recordings are made available as enduring materials for asynchronous learners as well.

Topics are selected by an interprofessional planning committee based on the changing humanitarian services practice environment, field surveillance and case data, leadership input, and evaluation results from prior sessions. Most topics are relevant to the entire interprofessional team and are designed to deepen the learners’ understanding of client needs and to improve the coordination and quality of care delivered to this population. Some sessions may be directed to a subset of the professions listed when the topic warrants a narrower focus.

Each session features at least one subject matter expert and combines didactic presentations with unfolding case studies drawn from the American Red Cross operations and moderated group discussion. Sessions are generally offered monthly, with frequency adjusted to the learning needs of health professionals within Humanitarian Services and to timing of changes in the services provided.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the health, mental health, and social needs of clients served by the American Red Cross, including the effects of disaster and social determinants of health.
  2. Explain the roles and responsibilities of each discipline on the interprofessional humanitarian services team.
  3. Apply evidence-based practices to client assessment, care delivery, and referral in shelter and community settings.
  4. Use interprofessional communication and coordination strategies to deliver integrated care to affected populations.
